Choanomonada

Unicellular organisms found in freshwater and in the oceans. A special group because their closest living relatives are the sponges which are the most primitive of the animals (Metazoa). Synonyms: Choanozoa, Choanomastigota, Choanoflagellida. Genera include: Bicosta, Codonosiga, Monosiga, Salpingoeca, Sphaeroeca, Stelexomonas, and Stephanoeca.
