One of the two families, Garryaceae, is native to western North America, Central America and eastern Asia, and has two species cultivated in southern Africa, each in one of the two genera in the family.

Two genera and 17 species, native to western North America, Central America, Greater Antilles and eastern Asia. Garrya elliptica (Feverbush) (native to western USA) and Aucuba japonica (Japanese laurel) are recorded by Glen (2002) as being cultivated in southern Africa.
