Seven families, four of which are encountered in southern Africa. Worldwide, there are 199 genera and 4445 species, with 20 genera and 57 species native to southern Africa, and four genera and 11 species naturalised. An additional 23 genera and 83 species are cultivated in the region.

Families encountered in southern Africa

Papaveraceae (poppy family)

There are about 41 genera and about 760 species, native mainly to the temperate regions of the northern Hemisphere but also extending down to Central and South America and to southern Africa. Four genera and six species are native to southern Africa, and four genera and nine species are naturalised. An additional eight genera and 19 species are cultivated in the region. The members of the family Fumariaceae has been included in the Papaveraceae.

Menispermaceae

Seventy genera and 420 species (Pantropical, extending into temperate regions), with nine genera and 16 species native to southern Africa.

Berberidaceae

Fourteen genera and 701 species (mainly north temperate, also Central and South America, East Asia and East Africa), none of which are native in southern Africa. However, three genera and 17 species are cultivated in the region.

Ranunculaceae (anemone family)

Sixty-two genera and 2525 species (worldwide), with seven genera and 35 species native to southern Africa, and two species naturalised. An additional 12 genera and 47 species are cultivated in the region.
