viruses > Double Strand DNA Viruses > Head-Tail viruses
> Herpesvirales > Alloherpesviridae
These viruses infect fish.
Species likely to be encountered in southern Africa
Cyprinid herpesvirus 1 (Carp pox herpesvirus,
CyHV1) Infects Cyprinus carpio (Common carp and Koi)
but, unlike Cyprinid herpesvirus 3, does not usually kill infected
fish. Symptoms include shiny, opaque white waxy lumps on the fins,
skin and lips. Regarded as the oldest recognised fish virus disease, being
described about 400 years ago (Smail and Munro 1989 in Crockford 2007). |

Cyprinid herpesvirus 2 (Goldfish haematopoietic
necrosis virus, Goldfish herpesvirus, CyHV2) Infects
Carassius auratus (Goldfish). Prevalence in southern African uncertain
but as Goldfish are a common aquarium fish in this region, presumably it
does occur here. |

Cyprinid herpesvirus 3 (Koi herpesvirus,
CyHV3, KHV)
Infects Cyprinus carpio (Common carp and Koi), often causing mass
mortality. An outbreak was
recorded from South Africa from 2001 - 2003 (Haenen et al. 2004). |
