Distribution and habitat

Breeds from south-eastern Europe to west-central Asia, heading south in the non-breeding season to the Sahel, from Senegal to Ethiopia, Sudan and Kenya. Although there have been four records in north-eastern and south-western Namibia and one each in central Botswana, the Northern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, it is quite possible that they were misidentified Jackal or Steppe buzzards. It is most commonly found in savanna and semi-arid steppes in the period from December-April.

Food

It mainly eats rodents and other small mammals, doing most of its hunting from a perch.
