Soetvarkblom [Afrikaans]

Life > eukaryotes > Archaeoplastida > Chloroplastida > Charophyta > Streptophytina > Plantae (land plants) > Tracheophyta (vascular plants) > Euphyllophyta > Lignophyta (woody plants) > Spermatophyta (seed plants) > Angiospermae (flowering plants) > Monocotyledons > Order: Alismatales > Family: Araceae > Genus: Zantedeschia

Rhizomatous geophyte. Similar in appearance to Zantedeschia aethiopica but different in the following respects:

  • has an odour (smells of freesia);
  • deciduous
  • fruiting stalks bend over rather than being upright; and
  • has a much more localised distribution: found in damp places in the dolerite outcrops of the Bokkeveld Plateau near Nieuwoudtville.
