A marine herb, growing on sandy substrates to a depth of about 30 m. Distributed along the east coast of Africa from Egypt to KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Also Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Arabia to the Philippines, Australia and New Caledonia. A favourite food of the Dugong.
