Seventeen genera and about 190 species, native to warm temperate regions and the tropics. Five genera and 17 species are cultivated in southern Africa.

Native to California, USA.

 

Philadelphus

About 60 species, native to North America, Central America, Asia and southeastern Europe. Five species and one hybrid are cultivated in southern Africa.

 

Deutzia

About 60 species, native to Asia, Europe and Central America, but with the highest diversity in China. Three species and two hybrids are cultivated in southern Africa.

 

Hydrangea

About 70-75 species, native to China, Korea, Japan, the Himalayas, Indonesia, North and South America. Seven species are cultivated in southern Africa.

Hydrangea macrophylla

Dichroa versicolor

Native to Hong Kong.
