Haemosporida
(haemosporidians)
[= Haemospororida]
Life
> Eukaryotes >
Chromalveolata > Alveolata >
Apicomplexa > Aconoidasida
Blood parasites of vertebrates. Includes Plasmodium
species, some of which are the causative agents of malaria, which kills
and debilitates millions of people annually, especially in Africa.
Genera
It has been difficult assembling a list of genera that
occur in southern African vertebrates, but here is a first attempt.
Dionisia
Single species of blood parasite, found in bats. Does it occur in any
southern African bats? |
|
Haemoproteus
Blood parasites in amphibians and reptiles (including birds). Vectors
include hippoboscid, Culicoides and Chrysops flies. |
|
Hepatocystis
Blood parasites in mammals, including bats, monkeys, squirrels and
hippopotamuses. |
|
Leucocytozoon
Haemosporidian blood parasites of vertebrates, especially birds. Vectors are
simuliid and Culicoides flies. |
|
Mesnilium
Blood parasites of fish. Vector is probably leeches. Does it occur in any
southern African fish? |
|
Nycteria
Blood parasites known from insectivorous bats. Vectors
unknown. |
|
Plasmodium
Blood parasites known from mammals and reptiles (including birds). Vectors
are mainly species of mosquito, but also
phlebotomine flies. Plasmodium species in humans are the
causative agents of malaria. |
|
Polychromophilus
Blood parasites of insectivorous bats with nycteribiid
flies as vectors. Does the genus occur in any southern African bat species? |
|
Saurocytozoon
Blood parasites of reptiles. Vectors are thought to be
culicine
mosquitoes. Does the genus occur in any southern African reptile
species? |
