Dinoflagellata (dinoflagellates)

[= Dinophyta, Dinophyceae, Dinophycidae, Dinomastigota]

Life > Eukaryotes > Chromalveolata > Alveolata > Dinozoa

Single-celled planktonic organisms. The most familiar are species of Noctiluca and Gonyaulax that can become so numerous in the sea that they form a 'red tide' that can lead to poisoning and death of sea life. In particular, Gonyaulax catenella becomes concentrated in filter-feeding muscles and renders them highly toxic. Used to be members of the algae and Chromophyta.
