The distribution of this family is limited to the Afrotropical region (i.e. Africa south of the Sahara as well as the West Indian Ocean islands (including Madagascar). Four genera and nine species are native to southern Africa.

Amatonga

Two species, Amatonga inhacae and Amatonga spicata, endemic to Mozambique. 

Loboschmidtia

One species, Loboschmidtia milleri, endemic to southern Africa (Zimbabwe).

Pseudamatonga

Three species, endemic to southern Africa.

Symbellia

Twelve species, occurring mainly on West Indian Ocean islands (including Madagascar) but, oddly, there are three species endemic to Namibia.
