Impey, William (1818-1896)

Weslyan missionary in South Africa who collected insects.

 

Was married to Mary Elizabeth, daughter of the Rev. Wm. Shaw and they had three sons and five daughters.

Born in Whitby, England.

1839

 

Arrived at the Cape as a missionary.

1848

 

Toured the Weslyan mission stations in the Orange River Sovereignty, Natal and Transkei with Wm. Shaw.

1856

 

Became superintendent of Wesleyan missions, with headquarters in Grahamstown.

1865

 

In addition to being superintendent of Weslayan missions, became principal of the Healdtown Institution near Fort Beaufort, where he lived.

1875

 

Returned to Grahamstown.

1878

 

Resigned from the Methodist Church for doctrinal reasons.

25 Sep 1896

 

Died in Grahamstown.

Specimens

There are specimens of Lepidoptera in the Transvaal Museum that were collected by William Impey.
