Fifty-six genera and 561 species are native to southern Africa, with two genera and eight species naturalised and one genus and two species cultivated.

Alatoseta

Alatoseta tenuis is the only species, native to Northern and Western Cape.

Amphiglossa

The 12 species are endemic to southern Africa.

Anaxeton

The 10 species are endemic to the Western Cape.

Anderbergia

The six species are endemic to the Western Cape.

Anisochaeta

Anisochaeta mikanioides is the only species and is found in KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape.

Anisothrix

Two species, endemic to Western Cape.

Antithrixia

Antithrixia flavicoma is the only species and is endemic to Namaqualand (Western Cape).

Arrowsmithia

Arrowsmithia styphelioides is the only species, endemic to Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Artemisiopsis

Artemisiopsis villosa is the only species, found in tropical and southern Africa.

Athrixia

There are 14 species, found in southern Africa, tropical Africa and Madagascar. There are 11 species native to southern Africa.

Atrichantha

Atrichantha gemmifera is the only species, endemic to Western Cape.

Bryomorphe

Bryomorphe aretioides is the only species, endemic to the Western Cape.

Callilepis

The four species are endemic to southern Africa.

Calotesta

The only species, Calotesta alba, is endemic to the Western Cape.

Comborhiza

Two species, endemic to southern Africa: Comborhiza longipes in the Western Cape and Comborhiza virgata in KwaZulu-Natal.

Denekia

The only species is Denekia capensis, native to southern Africa and further north. See Flora of Zimbabwe.

Dicerothamnus

Two species, endemic to southern Africa.

Disparago

There are nine species, all endemic to southern Africa.

Dolichothrix

The only species, Dolichothrix ericoides, is endemic to the Western and Eastern Cape.

Edmondia

There are three species, all endemic to the Western Cape.

Elytropappus

The five species are endemic to southern Africa.

Galeomma

Prostrate annual woolly herbs. Two species, endemic to southern Africa.  

Gnaphalium

A cosmopolitan genus of about 80 species, of which 13 are native to southern Africa and one naturalised.

Helichrysopsis

The only species, Helichrysopsis septentrionale, is endemic to southern Africa.

Helichrysum

Of the approximately 600 species found worldwide, 255 occur in southern Africa.

Hydroidea

The only species, Hydroidea elsiae, is endemic to the Western Cape.

Ifloga

The six species are found from Africa to the Middle East; also Canary Islands. There are four species native to southern Africa.

Lachnospermum

The three species are endemic to the Western Cape.

Langebergia

The only species, Langebergia canescens, is endemic to the Western Cape.

Lasiopogon

Seven of the eight species are endemic to southern Africa. The eighth species is Lasiopogon muscoides, which has a disjunct distribution in southern Africa and in a region from Spain and North Africa to Pakistan and northwestern India.

Lepidostephium

The two species are endemic to southern Africa.

Leysera

One species occurs from North Africa through to the Arabian Peninsula and the Middle East. The other two species are native to southern Africa.

Macowania

Of the 12 species, 10 are native to southern Africa. The other two occur in the Arabian Peninsula and Ethiopia.  

Metalasia

There are 53 species of which 47 are endemic to the Western Cape. Of the 5 remaining species, two have distributions in southern Africa that extend beyond the Western Cape and three occur in southern Africa but not in the Western Cape.  

Nestlera

The only species, Nestlera biennis, is endemic to the Northern and Western Cape.

Oedera

The 17 species are endemic to the Western and Eastern Cape.

Oreoleysera

The only species is Oreoleysera montana, endemic to the Western Cape.

Oxylaena

The only species is Oxylaena acicularis, endemic to the Western Cape.

Pentatrichia

The three species are endemic to southern Africa.

Petalacte

The only species is Petalacte coronata, endemic to the Western Cape.

Phaenocoma

The only species is Phaenocoma prolifera, endemic to the Western Cape.

Philyrophyllum

Two species - Philyrophyllum brandbergense and Philyrophyllum schinzii (see Flora of Zimbabwe), which has a wide distribution in Africa, including southern Africa.

Planea

The only species is Planea schlechteri, endemic to the Western Cape.

Plecostachys

The two species are endemic to southern Africa.

Printzia

The three species are endemic to southern Africa.

Pseudognaphalium

About 90 species, native to Africa, Asia, Europe and America with two species native to southern Africa, and one species naturalised.

Relhania

The 13 species are endemic to southern Africa.

Rhynchopsidium

The two species are endemic to the Northern and Western Cape.

Rosenia

The four species are endemic to southern Africa.

Seriphium

Three species recorded from southern Africa.

 

Stoebe

The 25 species are native to Africa and Madagascar with 22 of them native to southern Africa.

Syncarpha

The 28 species are endemic to the Western and Eastern Cape.

Tenrhynea

The only species is Tenrhynea phylicifolia, endemic to southern Africa.

Trichogyne

The nine species are endemic to southern Africa.

Troglophyton

The six species are endemic to southern Africa.

Vellereophyton

The eight species are endemic to southern Africa.  

Genera naturalised in southern Africa

Facelis

There are three species, all native to South America, of which one, Facelis retusa, has become naturalised in southern Africa.

Gamochaeta

The 52 species occur worldwide but the centre of diversity is South America. Five species have become naturalised in southern Africa.
