This scorpion is commonly found under stones in the Boland,
south coast, and Karoo, through to the Eastern Cape and is often misidentified
as Parabuthus capensis to which it is closely related. It inhabits hard
packed sandy, gritty and clayey soil in rocky areas where burrows are found
under rocks and stones. Where its range overlaps with Parabuthus capensis
the latter is found in open sandy habitats.
