About 200 species, native to the Americas, and Mediterranean Europe through to the highlands of East Africa. Five species naturalised in southern Africa and a further nine species are cultivated in the region.

Native to the Mediterranean.

Lupinus luteus (Yellow lupin)

Native to the Mediterranean.

Lupinus mexicanus

Native to Mexico and cultivated as a garden ornamental in South Africa, it is now a localised roadside weed in the northern suburbs of Harare, Zimbabwe.

Native from Greece to Israel.
